Why your child goes quiet after school

A school report that says “a pleasure to teach” is sometimes the first sign that something is wrong.

A child who holds herself together for six hours can look like the easiest kid in the class, then stop the moment she gets home.

Parents tell us the same three things:

  1. She walks in at half past three, drops her bag, and stops answering you.
  2. She sits down with her shoes still on and looks at nothing.
  3. An hour later she’s fine, and you wonder whether you imagined it.

You’ve probably been told she’s shy.

That it will stop as she gets older.

That there’s nothing to worry about, because the school has never once raised it.

Meanwhile you’re the only person who sees the hour that follows, and you’ve started to wonder whether you’re worrying more than you should.

The full article covers what’s happening in her body, why quiet children wait so much longer for help, and how your child’s school may also help.
