Nightmares after a work injury can go on the claim

A work injury can bring nightmares weeks after your body starts to heal. They can be part of the same injury. If the insurer accepts it, your workers comp claim can pay for a psychologist, with no gap fee.

You might have noticed:

  • A truck reverses in the car park and you jump.
  • You've put off the meeting with your manager about coming back to work, twice now.
  • You get angry at the kids over small things, and everyone says it's the pain.

One thing that helps before your next GP visit: write a few lines on paper or in your phone's notes.

  • How you're sleeping
  • Sounds that make you jump
  • Places you now avoid
  • Any headaches or stomach trouble

Then talk to your GP. Ask if this might be part of the work injury, and ask for a referral to a psychologist approved for workers comp.

If you've heard about the 2026 changes to mental health claims, they're for a different kind of claim, where there was no physical injury first.

ProActive Psychology takes workers comp referrals at our Fairfield and Bankstown clinics, with interpreters where needed.
